The SNOWMAN series began as a table lamp and has continued to expand into different forms, from portable lamps to pendants. Following the launch of the SNOWMAN25 and 40 Pendants, we began receiving requests for a larger version—one that could hold its presence in spacious, high-ceilinged environments such as cafés and galleries. To create a pendant with enough presence for larger spaces, we explored new materials and structural possibilities. The answer was paper.
Lightweight even at a larger scale, paper also diffuses light softly, helping to reduce glare while creating a gentle, ambient glow. By expanding the shade without compromising its natural presence within a space, we created the SNOWMAN50 & 70 Pendant.

SNOWMAN 시리즈는 테이블 조명으로 시작해 포터블, 펜던트 등 다양한 타입으로 그 영역을 확장해왔습니다. 특히 SNOWMAN25, 40 Pendant 출시 이후, 카페나 갤러리와 같이 넓고 층고가 높은 공간에서도 SNOWMAN을 활용할 수 있는 더 큰 사이즈에 대한 요구가 이어졌습니다. 대형 공간을 위한 충분한 존재감을 갖춘 펜던트를 위해 새로운 소재와 구조를 고민했고, 그 해답은 종이였습니다.
종이는 크기를 키워도 무게 부담이 적고, 빛을 부드럽게 확산시켜 눈부심을 줄이는 장점이 있습니다. 쉐이드의 크기를 확장하면서도 공간에 자연스럽게 스며드는 SNOWMAN50 & 70 Pendant를 완성했습니다.

The Biggest, Yet the Lightest

The SNOWMAN40 Pendant was the largest lamp in the SNOWMAN series. We envisioned a glass shade larger than 40cm in diameter, but as the scale increased, so did the weight and physical demands of glass. To overcome this limitation, we turned to paper, a material that could achieve a much larger scale without adding significant weight. The SNOWMAN40 weighs 2.6kg, while the SNOWMAN70 Pendant weighs just 650g. Although its diameter is 1.75 times larger, its weight has been reduced to one quarter.

SNOWMAN40 Pendant는 SNOWMAN 시리즈에서 가장 큰 조명이었습니다. 지름 40cm보다 더 큰 유리 쉐이드를 구상했으나, 유리는 크기가 커질수록 무게와 공간적 부담 역시 커지는 한계가 있었습니다. 이를 해결하기 위해 무게 부담이 적은 종이를 선택했습니다. SNOWMAN40은 2.6kg인 반면, SNOWMAN70 Pendant는 650g에 불과합니다. 크기는 1.75배 커졌지만, 무게는 4분의 1로 줄었습니다.

Paper on Wire Ribbing Structure

The SNOWMAN50 & 70 is made by carefully applying multiple layers of thin, supple paper over a repeating wire ribbing structure. One of the key challenges was preserving the distinctive SNOWMAN form—the flattened sphere with its subtle inward curve at the center—even at a much larger scale.
Paper is thin and flexible enough to follow the curved surface of the shade naturally. Yet as the scale grew, finding the right relationship between the paper and the wire ribs became increasingly important. If the spacing between the ribs was too wide, the paper could be easily damaged and the overall form could lose its refinement. If the spacing was too tight, the increased number of ribs would add unnecessary weight and interfere with the passage of light. The challenge was to find a structure that would preserve the soft, continuous curves of SNOWMAN while allowing the paper to retain its gentle light-transmitting quality.

SNOWMAN50 & 70은 반복적인 살대가 이어져 있는 구조에 여러 장의 얇고 부드러운 종이를 정교하게 풀칠해 입히는 방식으로 제작됩니다. SNOWMAN 특유의 납작한 구에서 가운데가 자연스럽게 들어간 형태를 큰 크기에서도 그대로 구현하는 것이 중요했습니다.
종이는 얇고 유연한 특성 덕분에 쉐이드의 곡면을 따라 자연스럽게 형태를 잡을 수 있지만, 사이즈가 커지면서 구조를 이루는 살대와 종이 사이의 관계를 정교하게 조율하는 것이 중요했습니다. 살대 사이의 간격이 넓으면 종이가 쉽게 손상되거나 형태가 투박해질 수 있고, 반대로 간격이 지나치게 촘촘하면 살대의 개수가 늘어나 구조가 무거워지고 빛의 투과를 방해할 수 있습니다. 은은하게 빛을 투과하는 종이의 특성을 살리면서도 SNOWMAN 고유의 부드러운 곡선을 구현할 수 있는 최적의 구조를 찾는 것이 핵심이었습니다.

We built the structure around a vertical wire frame with a square profile, then reduced the spacing between the horizontal ribs that define the SNOWMAN form from 15mm to 10mm. We also increased the number of paper sections applied to the ribs from six to eight to achieve the most refined silhouette. Dividing the shade structure into smaller units is much like reducing the size of pixels to increase resolution. With this carefully balanced structure, we were able to maintain SNOWMAN’s characteristic smooth and uniform silhouette even at a larger scale.

ㅁ자 형태의 세로 와이어가 중심을 이루도록 구조를 구성하고, SNOWMAN의 형태를 만드는 가로 살대 사이의 간격을 기존 15mm에서 10mm로 좁혔습니다. 또한 살대에 풀칠되는 종이의 분할 수를 6개에서 8개로 늘려 최적의 실루엣을 찾았습니다. 쉐이드 구조를 더 작은 단위로 나누어 구성하는 것은 픽셀의 크기를 작게 만들어 해상도를 높이는 것과 같습니다. 균형 잡힌 구조를 통해 큰 크기에서도 SNOWMAN 고유의 균일하고 부드러운 실루엣을 유지할 수 있었습니다.

Balance System

As a large paper pendant finished by hand, even subtle variations in material and structure can shift its center of gravity and cause the shade to tilt. To address this, we developed the SNOWMAN50 & 70 based on the balancer system commonly applied to ILKW pendant products, allowing the center of gravity to be fine-tuned even after installation. This makes it possible to maintain a stable, level shade according to the conditions of each installation environment.

수작업으로 완성되는 대형 종이 펜던트인 만큼, 소재와 구조의 미세한 차이로 무게중심이 정중앙에서 벗어나 기울임이 발생할 수 있습니다. 이를 보완하기 위해 일광전구의 펜던트 제품에 공통적으로 적용되는 발란서 구조를 바탕으로, 설치 후에도 무게중심을 조절할 수 있도록 설계했습니다. 이를 통해 설치 환경에 맞춰 대형 쉐이드의 수평을 안정적으로 유지할 수 있습니다.
